The Technique

Metalsmithing is the art of crafting metal into jewelry. It is a traditional technique used to create some of the most beautiful designs. At Myriad, we use several metal fabrication techniques to create our collection. The process involves a series of steps such as annealing, cutting, drilling, sawing, filing, sanding, forming, joining, and finishing.

One of the popular techniques we use is called Chain Maille. It involves interlocking jump rings to create beautiful pieces. This technique has been around for over 2000 years since medieval times, and over time, it has been modified to create jewelry and decorative pieces.

At the beginning of each project, we determine the size and wire gauge of the jump ring. Next, we coil the metal wire, saw it into individual jump rings, and tumble and clean them. One of the best things about chain maille is that most of the patterns can be customized to fit the needs of the user.

How To Care For Your Jewelry

Sterling Silver

The quick clean process involves just soap and water. Dawn soap is what the jewelry community suggests using. Gently rub the jewelry with soap and water between your hands, rinse, and let air dry. When storing your silver jewelry, keep each piece in a tarnish prevention bag.

If the silver is tarnished, using silver polish, a polishing cloth, or placing the piece in a tumbler for about 15-20 minutes will brighten the metal. A 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water is also effective.

The DIY method involves using basic ingredients from your kitchen. Line a cookie sheet with foil and fold the edges of the foil up. Lay the pieces on the cookie pan. Generously sprinkle baking soda over each piece followed by salt. Pour hot water, not boiling water, over the covered jewelry. Rinse and air dry.

14/20k Gold

Gold-filled metal will not tarnish. It is recommended to store your jewelry pieces in a tarnish prevention bag. To remove everyday dirt and oils, soak in soapy water then rub briskly with fingers or hands. Rinse and air dry.
